WHO WE ARE
WHO WE ARE WAYS OF WORKING TOGETHER STATEMENT OF FAITH GOVERNANCE OUR HISTORY
Metropolitan Community Church Brisbane is a radically inclusive Church, based in New Farm, Brisbane, Australia, with a mission to accept all, especially LGBTQIA+ individuals who have historically been hurt by churches and organised religion. MCC Brisbane aims to be a safe and supportive space for spiritual refugees in the rainbow community. We also have a small but dedicated group of Rainbow Parents who meet regularly to support each other in supporting their LGBTQIA+ kids.
In addition to weekly services in New Farm (which are also live-streamed to an online audience here in Australia and overseas), MCC Brisbane hosts small-group discussions, social walking groups and weekly activities, and is an ongoing fixture at the annual Brisbane Pride march and fair day. We actively participate in community discussions at the intersection of faith and sexuality, and each year you can see us at Brisbane Pride, sharing the message that Jesus loves all of us.
At MCC Brisbane we are a diverse bunch of people. People from every background, income level, race, colour and creed. We don’t all believe the same thing and that’s a good thing! How boring would church be if we all believed the same thing? Nevertheless, in our diversity, we are all united by one thing: Jesus. With all our different beliefs, personalities, challenges and strengths we gather around the light of Jesus and worship as one people.
Our Pastor
MCC Brisbane’s pastor is Dr Denise Powell. Denise is a wealth of wisdom, compassion, and discernment, who isn’t afraid to tackle the big questions within our community. She is very approachable and loves to listen to people over a coffee. Denise works at MCC Brisbane part-time (3 days per week) so is not available every day but will always make time for you.
As well as being our pastor, Denise is a biblical scholar with a PhD from the University of Queensland. She has taught New Testament at several theological colleges and presented at academic conferences. The combination of her pastoral heart and biblical scholarship make her very qualified to come alongside those who are struggling with the intersection of faith and sexuality/gender diversity.
Denise is married with two adult sons and a sheltie called Turner. She enjoys kayaking, running and the occasional Netflix binge. Her life goal is never to learn to sew.
If you would like prayer or a chat or have questions, please email Denise at pastor@mccbrisbanechurch.org.
Operations Manager
Our Operations Manager, Josie Broughton, loves to solve problems and help people. She is a person who blends creativity, curiosity, and tech-savviness to solve the operational challenges that MCC faces. Equipped with a Graduate Certificate in Ministry and a background in Design and Education, she is committed to honesty, fostering community, and spiritual growth at MCC.
Currently, Josie works 2 days a week for MCC assisting our board, pastor and volunteers with social media, policy, logistics and graphic design. She also loves questions. If you have a question about volunteering, want to know how to access past sermons, or need help accessing Slack, Josie is your person. You can email her at opsmanager@mccbrisbanechurch.org with any operational questions, queries, quandaries, comments or concerns.
Worship and Communion
Our worship tries to reflect our diversity and as such we sing a wide variety of songs. From contemporary Christian music to classic hymns and everything in between. We pray, we listen to a sermon, we listen to the reading of scripture. Communion is open to all and we really mean all. We hope our worship brings you closer to God and nourishes your soul for the week ahead.
Our Mission Statement
Our mission as MCC Brisbane is to provide a welcoming and sensitive worship environment, expressing the reconciliation between God and the world, including the LGBTQIA+ community; and to encourage each other to grow our faith in Jesus and foster involvement in social justice.
